"Dark Shadows," S. Henry, C. Parker [Mar. 17th, 2009|08:31 pm]
My baby's gone away
Where to, she didn't say
What am I gonna do?

I just can't hide
My foolish pride
Baby
I'm still in love with you

Why don't you drop a line?
Tell me you're doin' fine
My days are oh, so blue

I just can't hide
My foolish Pride
Baby,
I'm still in love with you

Why did you leave?
Why make me grieve?
Am I to suffer this way?
Am I to breathe a sigh
Please darlin', wont you try
To believe me
When I say I was wrong

Dark shadows haunting me
Nothing but misery
I can't escape,
It's so true

I just can't hide
My foolish pride
Baby,

I'm still in love with you.

Major UN agency suspends Gaza relief operations after Israeli strike kills driver
8 January 2009 –

A United Nations agency that is a lifeline for 750,000 Palestinian refugees in Gaza suspended food delivery operations today after Israeli strikes killed one of its drivers and injured a second after they had received Israeli clearance on the 13th day of an offensive launched with the stated aim of ending Hamas militant rocket attacks into Israel.

The body of another UN worker killed in a bombing several days ago was found today and UN officials said the suspension would continue until they received adequate assurances from Israel that such incidents will not be repeated.

The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said the clearly marked convoy carrying a UN flag and picking up supplies at the Erez crossing into Gaza had been coordinated with Israeli liaison officers who gave the green light. A second equally coordinated and marked UN medical convoy on its way to fetch the body of an UNRWA staffer killed in an earlier bombardment came under light arms fire in Gaza City.

“This is heartbreaking… a very, very difficult decision for us to take,” UNRWA Director of Operations in Gaza John Ging told a news conference at UN Headquarters in New York, speaking by video link from Gaza. “The population here are in a dreadful state and really need our help at this point but we have also a responsibility to our staff, and eager as they are, and believe me they are, we cannot fly in the face of the security situation.”

While UNRWA is perfectly prepared for reasonable risks in a conflict zone, “added to those is the fact that we cannot rely on firm commitments given by the Israeli side, carefully coordinated with them, green lights given to move… specifics provided, carefully coordinated throughout, and to have the Israeli forces on the ground firing at and now hitting aid workers.”

He said the movement of all staff would be suspended until UNRWA could be assured of their safety, and UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs John Holmes told the same news conference: “We are seeking those assurances… We’re talking very urgently about how we can make better arrangements, more reliable arrangements to avoid these incidents on the ground which we simply cannot see repeated. Otherwise we simply won’t be able to do our job.”

Mr. Ging said Israel was investigating the Erez incident, which came two days after Israeli shelling near an UNRWA school killed 40 people and injured more than 100. Israel said it was returning fire from the area of the school. UN officials stressed there were no Hamas or other militants inside the school.

On today’s second incident, which occurred during Israel’s stated daily three-hour lull in fighting, Mr. Ging said he had received no credible explanation from Israel as to how “the green light turned into three rounds” of light arms fire. Asked how he could be sure that Israel was responsible for the incidents, he said the Israelis had not so far disputed the cases.

“The headlines are that we desperately need a full and immediate ceasefire in Gaza to enable the civilian population to be protected and helped and that need is becoming more desperate by the hour,” Mr. Holmes said, stressing that most of the Strip was without power, although some fuel was getting through, and 20,000 people were in UN shelters.

He added that the Israeli lull, which the UN has called totally insufficient, allowed residents to get food supplies, access medical services, get to the dead and wounded in buildings, bury the dead and dig out more bodies from the rubble. Meanwhile rocket fire into Israel continued. He cited credible Palestinian reports that the death toll had now reached 758, of whom 257 were children and 56 women, with 3,100 wounded of whom 1,080 are children and 452 women.

He referred to “absolutely horrifying” accounts that the International Red Cross had reached bombed houses in Zaitoun, finding 12 dead people and four children alive next to their dead mother on mattresses in one, and 15 wounded in another, noting that what was particularly shocking was that a nearby Israeli team must have been aware of the wounded, yet did nothing.

While UNRWA has suspended its supplies for the 750,000 people classified as refugees, a further 250,000 of Gaza’s 1.5 million inhabitants receive food aid from the UN World Food Programme (WFP), which has not yet taken a decision on its operations.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the incidents, once again calling for an immediate ceasefire. In a statement issued by his spokesperson, he noted that four UNRWA local staff have been killed since the conflict started 13 days ago. Mr. Ging said that when another UN convoy came under fire yesterday, Israel said it was not firing at it but over it.

UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Executive Director Ann M. Veneman voiced deep concern that the ongoing violence had forced UNRWA to suspend operations. “This can only deepen an already critical humanitarian situation and put children at even greater risk of death or permanent damage. The distribution of food, water, fuel and medicine should not be impeded,” she said in a statement.

“UNICEF calls on all parties to the conflict to take every measure to protect children. It is only with an end to the conflict that children’s rights can be fully respected. In the interim, safe spaces and unimpeded humanitarian access must be established in Gaza urgently to ensure that children have access to regular life-saving supplies and support.”

UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres told the Security Council today that, with Gaza’s borders closed, the civilian population cannot flee to safety elsewhere. He called for strict adherence to humanitarian principles in and around Gaza, including respect for the universal right to seek and receive asylum.

Derrida's funeral address [Dec. 10th, 2008|05:23 pm]
As he had done for many of the friends who had predeceased him, Jacques Derrida penned a funeral address to be read out at his own funeral. Read aloud by his son Pierre as ritual demanded three days after his death (which occurred 9 October 2004), these, then, were Derrida's parting words:

"Jacques wanted neither ritual nor oration. He knows from experience what an ordeal it is for the friend who takes on this responsibility. He asks me to thank you for coming and to bless you, he begs you not to be mournful, to think only if the many happy moments which you gave him the chance of sharing with you.
Smile at me, he says, as I will have smiled at you till the end.
Always prefer life and never cease affirming survival [la survie: both survival and excess of life].
I love you and am smiling at you from wherever I may be."

This is the Dawning of the Age of Ignatieff [Dec. 9th, 2008|02:10 pm]
WOW, Bob Rae shocks the nation by bowing out of the Liberal leadership race and offering his unconditional support to Michael Ignatieff. Ignatieff is YOUR new leader of the Liberal party.

This is absolutely huge. For people not too aware of Iggy, wikipedia him and check out his very impressive laundry-list of accolades. Motherfucker has a Phd from Harvard and taught at Oxford and U of Toronto. Very conspicuous lack of a law degree (for those unaware, Stephen Harper is the first Prime Minister in Canadian history to not hold a degree in law), however his time as a journalist and documentary filmmaker makes him a very intriguing choice, in my mind.

He has had positive and productive dealings with Harper in the past, he and Bob Rae are former university roommates, and he has published extensively on his plans for the country, should he ever be PM. Exciting time for Canadian politics.

Just saw Death Proof for the first time.... [Nov. 28th, 2008|12:42 am]
.... and jesus christ that was terrible.

Even if we look past all the trappings of the Grindhouse gimmick and completely forgive all of that stuff... this flick is dull, slow, stupid. They build up the fact that this guy has a death proof car... but then in the end his car is overtaken and easily outmatched by some normal car these women are taking for a test drive.

Stuntman Mike is a guy who will drive himself through cars for kicks, has a scar on his face and a history of injuries... and immediately becomes a snivelling, whining pussy begging for forgiveness when these women get to him.

Its like Tarantino didn't know if he wanted a badass killer movie or a "I Spit on Your Grave" pseudo-girl power moment, so he went for both. And it REALLY didn't work.

Needless scene after needless scene, entire throwaway CHARACTERS, not to mention sideplots... maybe the worst movie I have ever seen. Damn. I am actually astounded that it was made.

Memememememe [Sep. 29th, 2008|12:34 pm]
Here are the rules:
1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."
2. I will respond by asking you 5 questions of a very personal nature.
3. You will update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this and an offer to interview someone else in the post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them 5 questions.

FROM CHAD:

1. You're booking WrestleMania 25: who would be in/win the WWE Championship match, the World Heavyweight Championship match, the Money in the Bank match, and the "requisite feud" match?

Why don't you just ask me the meaning of life while you're at it!? Gah... tough call... hmmm..... I would build for Jeff Hardy to fall short at NM and have him win the Royal Rumble after surviving from being entrant # 12 and go to WM to take the WWE title from Uber-heel Batista. For the World Title, I would have Jericho retain all the way to Mania pissing off everyone and squeaking out wins... only to finally get his come-uppance from a returning face Edge. The MitB would be won by MVP decisively, beating THE Brian Kendrick, Benjamin, Henry, Morrison, Miz, Guerrero, Marella. Then I would want a feud showdown between Randy (with Revolution) against Cena, both on a mission to take the other out of the WWE.

Oh, and Taker beats heel HHH to continue the streak, Big Show and Khali beat both tag team champs in the same night, and Mysterio challenges Matt Hardy for the ECW belt, citing how he got his start in ECW and wants to represent the brand.

2. What is your favourite Woody Allen film and why?

Now you're making me pick between my greatest loves? You're just cruel.

I'm going to take the easy way out and say Deconstructing Harry simply because he loses absolutely everything and, in the end, is alright anyhow.

3. Would you rather have Sam Malone or Alan Shore as your wingman? Why?

Alan Shore. At least if you strike out that night you know Alan wont leave you high and dry. "I'll take a friend over a wife everytime."

4. You get to either write one highly influential essay on a topic of your choice but wind up poor and dead at 35, or you get to have a comfortable position teaching and writing many small articles that simply disappear into the world of academic discourse... which do you choose?

The former. I'm likely going to be poor and dead at 35 as it is, so the prospect of doing something worthwhile in that span appeals

5. Do we look good?

We look great.

Crackberry [Aug. 23rd, 2008|01:47 pm]
So I got a Blackberry this month. My mother asked if it was necessary, mentioned that it seems like these little dream devices are only for jet-setters on the go with a ton of appointments.

I realise today as I update my calendar: I am now a jet-setter on the go with a ton of appointments.

My September just exploded. Toronto, Windsor, Hamilton, London. I'm organizing, studying, teaching, performing, auditioning, and watching some wrestling. I'm editing two papers to submit for publication and I'm about to compile applications for OGS and SSHRC.

This is going to be an excellent school year. And I don't think McMaster is quite ready for Adam J. Langton.

tickled [Aug. 11th, 2008|01:08 pm]
Heh....

I just got a modelling job. A paying modelling job. This seems silly and entertains me so. It is fun being me, lately -- anything goes.

On an unrelated note: August 21 is now Canada's National Sex Day. I intend to spend the entire day pleasuring and enjoying someone's naked body. Gotta help get this fledgling holiday off the ground, after all.

If anyone would like to donate their body to the cause, I have a hot, soft, eager mouth awaiting them.

Okay, now this is just cruelty. Am I the only person alive who thinks that the past actually means something?

Does this make sense to anyone else in ta interwebz?

On the road again [Aug. 1st, 2008|10:09 am]
Left Windsoria, post- Grand Return (tm). Had a great time, saw Chad (well, the latter point entails the former, no?). Chad's new friend Michelle is an absolute peach -- great sense of humour on that one (a requisite for spending more than 5 minutes within the Chaddy Shack). I say a PEACH, sirs.

Got to meet Gavin Sherwin, an adorable lil' shaver who is but one month into this world. The way I see it, Windsor is the ideal place to have a child -- what better way than to make EVERY trip you take out of town seem wonderous and magical, than to make home a smelly hell hole? (And you guys know how I feel about hell holes).

Four nights in Windsoria and I still looked for you around every corner. I can't even search you on facebook, now? How am I supposed to stare at photos and wish I could call..?

On My Way [Jul. 25th, 2008|02:03 pm]
Tomorrow, I am off to Chatham to emcee a wedding reception and have a wonderful, drunken time. Seeing as how I have no date, I will likely consume what can only be considered an heroic quantity of gin.

Monday, I make my grand return to Windsor (c'mon... a month's absence is enough for a grand return) to visit loved ones and meet my good good friend Chris' newborn son.

Thursday, to London with me, to spend the weekend with the smartest and most talented couple I know. We'll be taking in the London Fringe Festival and lauding/mocking each entry until our throats are sore. Said throats will immediately be calmed via gallons of ale.

THIS is summer. I am excited.

My liver, however, just told me to fuck myself.

Who wants to save $50 on a flight? [Jul. 5th, 2008|05:46 pm]
Hello. I've got a little deal for ya:

I am presently the proud owner of a WestJet Travel Credit totalling $451.62. WestJet is an impressive, hassle-free company, so transferring that credit to someone else's name costs nothing and only requires a single phone call, on my part.

So, here is the deal. The credit is valid so long as a trip is booked by Dec. 24 (you can actually fly out in 2009, you just have to have booked it by Xmas). So, I figure if someone wants to give me $400 and I give them the $451.62 credit, then everyone is happy.

Anyone out there planning on flying WestJet in the next year? You save $50 and I love you forever.

Any interested parties should send me an email at aj_langton@yahoo.ca
